Is California Traffic School Your Best Option?
In most cases, in an eighteen (18) month period, you have the option of going to California traffic school once. Here is the exact Vehicle Code from the California Department of Motor Vehicles:
“California Vehicle Code Section 1808.7 mandates that only one citation in an eighteen (18) month period be masked from public view on your driving record.”
This eighteen (18) month period is calculated from citation date to citation date, not classroom attendance date. You may attend any California DMV approved traffic school. Click here for a list.
The school will charge a fee ranging from $20.00 to $45.00 and the court will charge a non-refundable, State-mandated administration fee of $52.00 in addition to the fine (bail amount) of the ticket. The bail and administrative fee must be paid to the court prior to the completion of your on-line school. If payment has not been received, your certificate of traffic school completion will be rejected.
The question to ask yourself is whether you want to play your ‘get out of a ticket traffic school’ card for your current violation. Much of the decision has to do with the following factors:
- Make sure you understand what going to traffic school in California means. Many people are under the false impression that traffic school will cause the fines to be waived. As explained above this, unfortunately is not the case. If you are able to attend traffic school, you will have to pay for, not only the costs of the school, but the amount of the fine and administration fees as well.
- The biggest, and virtually, only benefit to attending traffic school is the impact it will have on your California driving record. We all realize the importance of having a clean driving record in California. Not only can your driving record be pulled in evaluating your character (for a job or promotion as an example), but more importantly your automobile insurance carrier will review your driving record when renewing your policy (or at any time, they deem it appropriate).
- Beyond traffic school once every 18 months, every infraction you receive affects your driving record unless you decide to fight the traffic ticket.
